Seeding and Templated Grain Growth for Control of Phase Formation, Microstructure, and Properties of Piezoelectric and Structural Ceramics

Presented by Dr. Gary L. Messing
Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Science
Head, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Penn State University

In the early 1980s seeding of alumina phase formation was revealed as a critically important means to control phase formation temperature, sintering and microstructure evolution. Since then, seeding has become a staple in the processing tool box for controlling difficult phase formation processes, lowering sintering temperature and powder synthesis. I will briefly review the scientific underpinnings of seeding and then present some of the new directions, systems and applications where seeding plays an important role.

Using concepts from seeding I present two cases where microstructure is controlled by the templated grain growth process. In the first case I discuss the processing- microstructure-property relations of highly textured PMN-PT piezoelectric ceramics processing by templated grain growth. The second case will show how we can use both crystallographic orientation control and spatial dopant deposition to obtain microstructured 3D alumina-based microstructures having unique fracture properties.
