Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Localized Plasmons in the Service of Chemical Sensing

The fabrication of many types of nanocrystals is well established, however, the assembly of nanocrystals into functional heterostructures presents many challenges. Directed self-assembly takes advantage of interactions between a substrate and colloidal particles to generate complex nanostructures. This talk will present the directed self-assembly of silver nanocubes (NCs) into ordered arrays of NC clusters. These arrays are optimal substrates for automated scanning microscopy: Substrates carrying these arrays were implemented in the study of surface-enhanced Raman scattering phenomena and provided insights to plasmonic hot-spots generation and degradation. We will present results from experimental and numerical analysis of a population of silver NC dimers.
