Functional Materials Research at NIST

Martin Green
Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

In the field of materials science, the category of “functional” materials has been defined to include almost all materials that do not serve a mechanical or structural role. Thus, functional materials comprise (semiconductor, sensor, thermoelectric, catalyst, photovoltaic, piezoelectric, magnetic, smart, etc.) materials. In this talk, I will describe ongoing functional materials research activities at NIST (the National metrology institute), for a potpourri of applications such as the advanced CMOS Gate stack, post-CMOS nanoelectronics, thermoelectric energy devices, nanocalorimetry, and carbon (CO2) mitigation. We will emphasize the role of combinatorial materials science in some of these activities.

About the Speaker

Dr. Martin L. Green is the leader of the Functional Properties Group of the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). His group incorporates experimental as well as computational approaches for understanding the fundamental properties of functional (electronic, magnetic, multiferroic, thermoelectric, etc.) materials. Before coming to NIST in 2003, Dr. Green was at IMEC Labs in Leuven, Belgium, working in the advanced gate dielectric program. Prior to that, he was at Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies/Agere Systems for 27 years. He has B.S. (1970) and M.S. (1972) degrees from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and a Ph.D. (1978) in Materials Science from M.I.T. Dr. Green is very active in the materials science community, and served as president of the Materials Research Society (MRS) in 2001.
