Helen Lan, who is expecting to receive her B.S. degree in Materials Science Engineering in 2017, has received the James Clark School of Engineering International Student Award for her significant international engineering activities. Lan, who is minoring in international engineering, studied abroad at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and wrote a manual for future UMD to NTNU exchange students after returning State-side. She provides service to the University by working the Study Abroad Fair and Women in Engineering DREAM conference, where she answers questions and encourages current, and future/high school students, to seek education outside of the classroom (i.e. abroad). Lan also provides orientation sessions and mentoring to international students who request help in acclimating to life in the U.S., at UMD, etc. She will be recognized for her contributions at the Honors and Awards Ceremony on April 19, 2017, at the Stamp Student Union.

Lan, however, is no stranger to the spotlight. She was recently featured on the cover of E@M magazine for her development of an efficient, jet-fuel burner for U.S. Army troops. Indeed, she received a Silver Medal for her efforts from the Army Research Lab Student Symposium (see "Cooking With Materials Science").

Congratulations Helen, and many thanks for your leadership and service!
