Title: Perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells: progress, challenges and opportunities

Abstract: With commercial silicon solar cells approaching both practical and theoretical efficiency limits, there is growing research effort to develop new low-cost technologies capable of reaching efficiencies of 30% and beyond. Silicon-based tandems that combine current industrial technology with emerging thin-film PV materials are considered the most cost-effective option for achieving this, with the latest edition of the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaics (ITRPV) predicting Si-based tandems to appear in mass production after 2019. The rapid rise of perovskite solar cell performance in the past few years has made perovskites the material of choice as a top cell for such tandems due to their high efficiency and simple, low-cost fabrication.

Optimization of tandems requires detailed knowledge and characterization of the optical and electrical properties of every layer, as well as practical constraints imposed by processing sequences and chemical incompatibilities. This presentation will review the key material, optical and device performance requirements for achieving high-efficiency perovskite-silicon tandem cells in both monolithic and mechanically-stacked configurations.  In particular, I will present the detailed design, optimization and experimental demonstration of a 26.4% efficient tandem cell incorporating a bandgap-optimized multi-cation perovskite cell with a back-contact c-Si cell. Recent progress towards characterizing and improving perovskite cell stability, and understanding the physical origin of hysteresis and slow-transient phenomena will also be discussed.

Biography: Dr Tom White jointly leads the perovskite PV research group in the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University, Canberra. He has a BSc and PhD in Physics from the University of Sydney, and has published almost 90 Journal Papers in the fields of photovoltaics, nanomaterials and photonics which have received over 6000 citations.  Dr White's primary research focus for the last 4 years has been the development of high efficiency perovskite solar cells and perovskite-silicon tandems, resulting in a number of high-impact results, including the recent demonstration of a record 26.4% efficient tandem device. His research expertise spans fundamental material studies, advanced characterization and simulation methods, and device engineering.
