Combinatorial Search of Ideal Shape Memory Alloys

Professors Ichiro Takeuchi and Manfred Wuttig published an article in Nature Materials on combinatorial search of "ideal" shape memory alloys. (Nature Materials 5, 286 [2006]) The effort was led by Jun Cui, who was a postdoc and now an adjunct professor of the department. The non-linear theory of martensite, broadly applicable to structural transformations in general, was experimentally verified for the first time. Shape memory alloys with minimal hysteresis have the potential to substantially increase the fatigue life of medical stent devices. The work was performed in collaboration with University of Minnesota, Argonne National Laboratory, CAESAR, and Hirosaki University, and it was funded by ONR and NSF.
