Title: Opportunities in Applied Photovoltaic Research
Abstract:
Solar energy generation has grown 35-fold in the last 10 years. Solar photovoltaic prices have dropped by two thirds over the last 5 years. Solar energy is now generating ~2% of the total US electricity. Are there any unsolved research problems left? Is materials research still relevant for solar industry? The presentation will describe the DOE SunShot program and its mission to drive down the cost of solar electricity and support solar adoption through funding applied research and development. The discussion of opportunities for material science and characterization research in applied photovoltaic research will follow.
Bio:
Inna Kozinsky is a Science and Technology Advisor at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office. She has joined the SunShot PV team in Oct 2014 as a contractor and is responsible for managing both university and national lab projects. Before joining the DOE SunShot team, Inna was a Senior Research Engineer at Robert Bosch Research and Technology Center in Palo Alto, CA, where she worked on thin-film silicon and CIGS PV R&D, optical and ab initio modeling of PV materials and devices, vibrational power harvesting, and MEMS sensors. She received her PhD in Physics from Caltech in 2007, where her thesis work focused on nonlinear dynamics in nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS). Inna received a BA in Physics and Math and MA in Physics from Harvard University in 2000.
