Low Dimensional Mid and High Entropy Chalcogenides: New Functional
Materials for Energy Applications


Abstract
The demand for new functional materials requires that we expand our search beyond conventional compositions to more exotic ones realized via unconventional design rules. Generating mid- and high-entropy structures are emerging strategies to stabilize materials entropically for the enhanced functional properties that are not simple linear combinations of the individual component phases. Thus far, this concept has mainly been explored for 3D materials; the potential of high entropy in lower dimensional materials, which by itself imparts attractive functionality (e.g., electronic, catalytic), has yet to be explored. In this talk, I will discuss the rich space of low-dimensional (1D and 2D) mid-and high-entropy metal chalcogenide materials to discover; (i) electrocatalysts with transformational potential to selectively convert carbon emissions into liquid fuel, (ii) electronic materials with tunable bandgap for operation at high temperatures, (iii) super lubricant solid materials for operation at high loads and air environment, (iv) super stable ceramic materials for extreme conditions, and (iv) highly efficient catalysts for Li-gas batteries and water treatment. Moreover, I will discuss the kinetics and thermodynamics in the growth of low dimensional materials and in particular anisotropic growth of onedimensional mid-entropy structures. Direct evidence will be provided for the 3D structure of the charge density wave phase in individual structures at cryogenic temperature.


Biography
Amin Salehi-Khojin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and completed four years of post-doctoral studies in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on the design and synthesis of advanced materials for applications in energy storage and conversion systems and electronic devices. He has co-authored more than 90 journal publications, including three in Science, two in Nature, as well as papers in Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Communications.  He is co-inventor in more than 15 patents/patent applications. His research has been featured in over 1000 news releases, including: Times of London, Guardian, New York Post, Huffington Post, Forbes, Christian Science Monitor, MIT Technology Review and Chicago Tribune. His recent research on Li-CO2 batteries has been featured in Cold Fusion TV with close to 1M views on the corresponding YouTube video. Dr. Salehi-Khojin was named one of 100 leading global thinkers in 2016 by Foreign Policy Magazine. He was also listed among “Illinois Researchers Who Wowed Us in 2016.” His research is supported by multiple grants from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy
