Seeking New Low-κ Dielectrics and Topological Superconductors
Abstract: Electronics at high frequencies (eg. “5G” electronics) places special constraints on even simple insulating media that separate electronic conductors. Currently, silica is widely employed as materials with low-κ (dielectric constant) in printed circuit boards etc. In the first part of the talk, I will describe systematic efforts to screen, prepare, and measure alternate low-κ materials, most notably ALPO4 and Al(HCOO)3.[1]
In the second part of the talk, I will describe the exciting new family of superconductors, AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs)[2,3] that possess a kagomé networks and display a panoply of interesting phenomena, including charge-density wave ordering and topological surface states.

Bio: Ram Seshadri received his PhD in Solid State Chemistry in 1995 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, working under the guidance of Professor C. N. R. Rao FRS. After some years as a postdoctoral fellow in France and Germany, he returned to IISc as an Assistant Professor in 1999. He moved to the Materials Department (College of Engineering) at UC Santa Barbara in 2002. Since 2020, he is Distinguished Professor in the Materials Department and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He is also the Fred and Linda R. Wudl Professor of Materials Science and Director of the Materials Research Laboratory: A National Science Foundation Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (NSF-MRSEC). His work, embodied in over 400 journal publications, broadly addresses the topic of structure–composition–property relations in crystalline inorganic and hybrid materials.
