MSE Celebrates 20 Years of Innovation and Excellence
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is excited to announce its 20th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
The celebration also honors retired Professors Manfred Wuttig and Alexander L. Roytburd for their contributions and exemplary service to MSE as educators, researchers and mentors. Presentations, panel discussions, reflections and facility tours are arranged throughout the day– ending with dinner with A. James Clark School of Engineering Dean Samuel Graham, Jr.
A look into the future
With opening remarks by department Chair JC Zhao and former Chair Aris Christou, the anniversary will take guests to the Maryland NanoCenter FABLAB, Center for Materials Innovation, Maryland Energy Innovation Institute, 3D printing labs and other facilities where MSE researchers work towards the future of materials.
From fast-charging batteries to power electric vehicles, moldable wood materials to support sustainable structures, materials for extreme environments and more, the event’s programming will showcase the innovations that drive MSE.
Look how far we’ve come
Today, the Department has about $18 million in annual research expenditures and our innovations have been featured on the front cover of Nature and Science five times, which have also led to four R&D 100 Awards and the creation of eight startup companies.
While we are known for research at the nanoscale, this year we are celebrating big.
