MatES

The Materials Engineering Society (MatES) is an undergraduate student society devoted to the advancement of materials science. MatES is UMD's Materials Advantage Student Chapter of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). It's recognized by other professional societies including ASM International and the American Ceramic Society (ACerS). Membership is free and includes the benefits of lounge use and the society's social, service, technical and career development activities.

Blacksmithing Club

The Blacksmithing Club at The University of Maryland is a club for all students to appreciate the art and craft of blacksmithing. Our goal is to create artistic and functional pieces and compete in competitions such as the TMS bladesmithing competition. The club is advised by MSE department professors, Drs. Babu and Valentino.

SME

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) represents the entire North American manufacturing industry, including manufacturers, academia, professionals, students, and the communities in which they operate. We believe manufacturing holds the key to economic growth and prosperity, and champion the industry's potential. SME designs new ways to understand and solve problems, and our solutions advance the next wave of growth in manufacturing.

The mission of ECS is to advance theory and practice at the forefront of electrochemical and solid state science and technology, and allied subjects.

Material Advantage™ offers a single low-cost membership that provides access to the materials science and engineering professional’s most preeminent societies:

  • ACerS – The American Ceramic Society
  • AIST – Association for Iron & Steel Technology
  • ASM International – The Materials Information Society
  • TMS – The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society

Founded in 1973, the Materials Research Society boasts a large, globe- and discipline-spanning membership. The MRS facilitates information exchange and support for those in a variety of scientific fields that produce, study, or are affected by materials. The society holds two major annual meetings, publishes the MRS Bulletin and Journal of Materials Research, offers tutorials at symposia, and encourages technical interaction among academic and industry professionals.

An international professional organization, The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) serves students, professionals, and academics throughout the entire fields of materials science and engineering. Divisions of the organization cover electronic, magnetic, and photonic materials; extraction and processing; light metals; processing and manufacturing; and structural materials. In addition offering publications, forums, and events, TMS promotes technology transfer, accreditation of educational programs, professionalism and ethical conduct.

Honors and Awards

Each of the professional materials-oriented societies sponsor awards to recognize outstanding scholarship and undergraduate research.
