Takeuchi, Collaborators Featured in NIST Annual Report

Research on multiferroic thin films by Department of Materials Science and Engineering professor Ichiro Takeuchi and his colleagues was highlighted in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Neutron Research's (NCNR) 2011 annual report.

"The magnetic structure of multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films" describes efforts to identify, characterize and develop multiferroic materials—those that possess both ferroelectric and magnetic order. Materials possessing the both qualities are rare, and those that exhibit them at room temperature are even rarer. BiFeO3 (also known as BFO), the subject of the paper, is currently the only known material that exhibits all of these characteristics.
