1951 – Metallurgy program established in Chemical Engineering, William Pennington hired as first professor

1960 – Installation of the first Maryland University Training Reactor (i.e. UMD Radiation Facilities)

1961 – ARPA funds an IDL in Materials Research at the University of Maryland

1962 – Establishment of the Materials Engineering Program as part of the “General Engineering B.S. Degree Program,” administered by Chemical Engineering with faculty members from both of the Departments of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering

1968- Professor Ian Spain becomes the head of the Engineering Materials Program in Chemical Engineering

1975 – Robert L. Park of the Physics Department becomes Director of the Center for Materials Research

1985 – Marvin Roush appointed Chair of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering (CNE), establishes Institute for Systems Research (ISR), one of the first engineering research centers in the country

1986 – Manfred Wuttig appointed as Director of the Materials Program of CNE

1986 - The Reliability Engineering Program is launched

1989 - Chemical and Nuclear Engineering splits into two separate departments: Chemical Engineering and Materials and Nuclear Engineering

1989 – Frank Munno becomes first chair of Materials and Nuclear Engineering until 1990 at which point Manfred Wuttig becomes acting chair of Materials and Nuclear Engineering (MNE).

July 1993 – Aris Christou becomes MNE Chair

1995 - Materials Science becomes a new B.S. degree program, approved by the Maryland Higher Education Board

1996 – The University of Maryland National Science Foundation Materials Research and Engineering Center is established

1996 – Gary Rubloff is hired as a MNE Professor and ISR Director

1999 - First B.S. degrees in MNE are awarded

1999 - MNE's first successful ABET review

2002 – MNE splits into Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), at which point Nuclear and Reliability programs were transferred to Mechanical Engineering. Aris Christou appointed first chair of MSE

2003 – Robert Briber appointed chair of MSE until 2015

2004 - The Maryland NanoCenter is established in conjunction with CNMS

2009 – Establishment of Nanostructures for Electrical Energy Storage DOE-EFRC, Gary Rubloff is appointed as director

2009 – 2013 - several new faculty members - Eric Wachsman, Liangbing Hu, Marina Leite and Yifei Mo - join MSE faculty

2015 - Raymond Phaneuf appointed Interim Chair.

2017 – The Maryland Energy Innovation Institute (MEI2) is established and Eric Wachsman is appointed as Director

2019 - Ji-Cheng "JC" Zhao joins MSE as Professor and Department Chair.
